Between The Injection Valve and Column

From the injection valve, the flow path typically continues on to the column. However, before the column is reached, it is a good idea to place a couple of accessories inline to help ensure top system performance. The first product is a Precolumn Filter, such as our A-318. This low swept-volume product is ideal for removing sample and valve seal particulates, while not contributing significantly to sample dilution.

Another terrific product to place inline between the injection valve and the column is a Guard Column. The guard column is generally packed with the same material as the analytical column, as its job is to remove sample components that may react negatively with the stationary phase inside the analytical column tube. Due to the variety of columns on the market, we will not be making a recommendation as to which guard column to purchase. For a complete list of our guard columns, please go to Columns and Column Accessories.

The connection between the injection valve and your column is usually accomplished with 1/16" OD Stainless Steel or PEEK™ Polymer Tubing, often with a .010" ID. You need to keep the tubing as short as possible. Therefore, we recommend the U-111, a 5 cm piece of stainless steel tubing, or the 1531B PEEK tubing, easily cut with our A-327 Polymer Tubing Cutter. We also recommend you use either the U-400/U-401 Stainless Steel Nut and Ferrule combination at the head of the column or one of my favorite Fingertight Fittings, the F-120 one-piece fitting, or the F-195 SealTight™ two-piece fitting, or the F-287, long knurl/hex headed version of our SealTight fitting.
